Crochet Gnome Pattern – Ideal for Christmas

Today I am going to share with you pattern for crochet gnome pattern – ideal for Christmas 🙂 Yes, it’s almost Christmas for me and as for crochet addict I need to make as much Christmas toys as possible!

Size of this adorable crochet Christmas gnome is approximately 16 cm, or 6″.

Materials you will need:

Abbreviations:

SC – single crochet

ST – stitch

INC – single crochet increase

DEC – single crochet decrease

SL ST – slip stitch

CH – chain

HDC – half double crochet

Legs, body and head

Make 2 legs but when making second leg don’t finish it off as it will be start of our gnome body.

We will be starting with red colour then changing it to green and finally changing it to white.

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 3: (sc, inc) repeat 6 times [18]

Round 4: (in back loops only) sc in all st [18]

Round 5-6: sc in all st [18]

Round 7: (dec) repeat 6 times, sc in next 6 st [12]

Round 8: sc in all st [12]

Crochet Christmas gnome round 8

Change the colour to green.

Round 9: (sc, inc) repeat 6 times [18]

Roud 10-11: sc in all st [18]

Finish off first leg but don’t finish second.

Round 12: in this round we are going to join legs together and will start working on the body. Put your legs together making sure both legs are facing the same way.  Single crochet a few stitches in the second leg if you need to. After joining start crocheting: 36 sc around. You should end up in the middle of the belly on the front side [36]

Round 13: (5 sc, inc) repeat 6 times [42]

Round 14-19: sc in all st [42]

Round 20: (5 sc, dec) repeat 6 times [36]

Round 21-22: sc in all st [36]

Round 23: 2 sc, dec, (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 5 times, 2 sc [30]

Round 24-25: sc in al st [30]

In this stage we need to move our beginning of the round to the side of our body. Crochet 8 sc (or more) till start of the round will be on the side. Then change the colour to white.

Round 26: crochet in back loops only, sc in all st [30]

Round 27: sc in al st [30]

Round 28: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 6 times [24]

Round 29-30: sc in al st [24]

Round 31: sc, dec, (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 5 times, sc [18]

Round 31

Now we need to change to body colour.

Round 32: sc in all st [18]

Round 33: (inc) repeat 9 times [36]

Round 34: (sc in next 5 st, inc) repeat 6 times [42]

Round 35: sc in next 3 st, inc, (sc in next 6 st, inc) repeat 5 times, sc in next 3 st [48]

Round 36-44: sc in all st [48]

It’s time to insert eyes between round 39 and 40, 3-4 stitches apart.

Round 44

Round 45: sc in next 3 st, dec, (sc in next 6 st, dec) repeat 5 times, sc in next 3 st [42]

Round 46: (sc in next 5 st, dec) repeat 6 times [36]

Round 47: sc in next 2 st, dec, (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 5 times, sc in next 2 st [30]

Round 48: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 6 times [24]

Round 49: sc in next 1 st, dec, (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 5 times, sc in next 1 st [18]

Round 50: (sc in next 1 st, dec) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 51: (dec) repeat 6 times [6]

Fasten off and sew off remaining part. Weave at the end.

Crochet Christmas gnome finished body

Nose

Use yarn of desired body colour. It will be later attached to the head of our crochet Christmas gnome.

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 3: (dec) repeat 6 times [6]

Finish with sl st and leave long tail for sewing. Stuff slightly.

Crochet Christmas gnome nose

Hands

Make 2 hands. Stuff slightly at the bottom of your hands but don’t stuff at the top. Start crocheting with red yarn and finish with white.

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 3-5: sc in all st [12]

Round 6: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 2 times [10]

Now we are changing to white colour.

Round 7-11(5 rounds): sc in all st [10]

Round 12: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 2 times [8]

Round 13-15 (3 rounds): sc in all st [8]

At the end sl st both sides together and leave long tail for sewing

Hat

Starting with white yarn make chain 44 and join in circle.

Round 1: ch 2, hdc in all st, join round with sl st [44]

Round 2: ch 1, sc in all st, join round with sl st [44]

Now change colour to red.

Round 3: (crochet in back loop only) ch 2, hdc in all st, join round with sl st [44]

Round 4-5: ch 2, hdc in all st, join round with sl st [44]

Round 6: (hdc in next 20 st, hdc dec) repeat 2 times, join round with sl st [42]

Round 7: hdc in next 10 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 19 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 9 st, join round with sl st [40]

Round 8: (hdc in next 18 st, hdc dec) repeat 2 times, join round with sl st [38]

Round 9: hdc in next 9 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 17 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 8 st, join round with sl st [36]

Round 10: (hdc in next 16 st, hdc dec) repeat 2 times, join round with sl st [34]

Pom-pom

Make it out of white yarn, stuff at the end.

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 3: (sc, inc) repeat 6 times [18]

Round 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc) repeat 6 times [24]

Round 5-8(4 rounds): sc in all st [24]

Round 9: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 6 times [18]

Round 10: (sc, dec) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 11: (dec) repeat 6 times [6]

Fasten off and sew off remaining part. Leave long tail for sewing.

Sew the pom-pom to the hat.

Assembly

Sew the nose to the head below eyes:

Use white soft fluffy yarn for the beard. Cut about 20 pieces of yarn in 15 cm length.

Take your first strand of beard and slip stitch through a stitch next to your nose. Do 5 stitches on both sides and some under the nose.

Beard assembly

Sew arms to the body.

Sew buttons to the belly.
