Christmas is coming and it’s time to make some Santa’s little helpers – crochet Christmas gnome. This crochet pattern will help you with this little mission 😊

If stated DK yarn and hook size will be used – total height of the gnome will be approximately 30cm or 12 inches 😊

Materials and tools you will need:

Abbreviations:

CH – chain

SC – single crochet

ST – stitch

SL ST – slip stitch

INC – increase

DEC – decrease

HDC – half double crochet

DC – double crochet

FLO – front loops only

Legs

Make 2 legs out of red colour yarn.

Begin with chain 7 and start crocheting from ch 2 (work in continuous circles):

Round 1: sc in next 5 st, 3 sc into the last stitch, turn chain around: sc in next 5 st, 3 sc into the last stitch [16]

Round 2: sc into next 5 st, (inc) repeat 3 times, sc into next 5 st, (inc) repeat 3 times [22]

Round 3-4: sc in next 22 st [22]

Round 5: sc in next 4 st, (dec) repeat 2 times, hdc, dc, hdc, (dec) repeat 2 times, sc in next 7 st [18]

Round 6: sc in next 4 st, dec, hdc, dc, hdc, dec, sc in next 7 st [16]

Round 7: sc in next 4 st, (dec) repeat 3 times, sc in next 6 st [13]

Round 8: sc in next 4 st, dec, sc in next 7 st [12]

Using toy filling stuff bottom of the legs only.

Round 9-23 (16 rounds): sc in next 12 st [12]

Put two sides of the top of the leg together and slip stitch them as shown in the photo below. Leave long tail for sewing.

Make them out of Zarela Baby Fluffy white yarn. Start with chain of 13 and join in circle with sl st.

Rounds 1-2: ch 1, sc into same st, sc into next 12 st.

Finish each round with sl st in the first ch from the beginning of our round.

Main body

Start making our body with red yarn. Work in continuous circles.

Round 1: 8 sc in magic cirle [8]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 8 times [16]

Round 3: (sc in next st, inc) repeat 8 times [24]

Round 4: (sc in next 2 st, inc) repeat 8 times [32]

Round 5: (sc in next 3 st, inc) repeat 8 times [40]

Round 6: (sc in next 4 st, inc) repeat 8 times [48]

Round 7: (sc in next 5 st, inc) repeat 8 times [56]

 

Body round 7

Round 8-13(6 rounds): sc in next 56 st [56]

Body round 16

Round 14: (sc in next 5 st, dec) repeat 8 times [48]

Round 15-20(6 rounds): sc in next 48 st [48]

Round 21: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 8 times [40]

Round 22-25(4 rounds): sc in next 40 st [40]

Change yarn colour to your preferred skin colour and start stuffing with toy filling as you go.

Round 26-30(5 rounds): sc in next 40 st [40]

Round 31: (sc in next 8 st, dec) repeat 4 times [36]

Round 32: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 6 times [30]

Round 33: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 6 times [24]

Round 34: (sc in next 2 st, dec) repeat 6 times [18]

Round 35: (sc in next 1 st, dec) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 36: (dec) repeat 6 times [6]

Round 37: (dec) repeat 3 times [3]

Fasten off and sew off remaining part. Weave at the end.

Arms

Start using your preferred body colour yarn and make 2 hands. Work in continuous circles.

Round 1: 6 sc into magic ring [6]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 3: (sc in next st, inc) repeat 6 times [18]

Round 4: sc in next 18 st [18]

Change yarn to red colour.

Round 5-6: sc in next 18 st [18]

Round 7: (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 3 times [15]

Round 8-10 (3 rounds): sc in next 15 st [15]

Round 11: (sc in next 3 st, dec) repeat 3 times [12]

Round 12-15 (4 rounds): sc in next 12 st [12]

Stuff very slightly only bottom of our arms with toy filling.

Put two sides of the top of the arm together and slip stitch them together. Leave long tail for sewing.

Round 1: 6 sc into magic ring [6]

Round 2: (inc) repeat 6 times [12]

Round 3: sc in next 12 st [12]

Round 4: (dec) repeat 6 times [6]

Finish off with sl st and leave long tail for sewing.

Hat

Start working with red yarn and work in continuous circles.

Change yarn to Zarela Baby Fluffy Wool.

Finish off with sl st.

Assembly

Step 1: Put leg warmers on the legs.

Step 2: Using tapestry needle attach legs to the body between rows 7 and 8, approximately 6 stitches apart from each other.

Step 3: Using tapestry needle attach the nose to the body between rows 25 and 26 (that’s where red yarn meets body colour yarn) and stuff the nose slightly before closing it off.

Step 4: Using tapestry needle attach arms to the body – 6 stitches away from the nose each side.

Step 5: Using measuring tape measure the distance between arms – that’s how wide we will need to make the beard.

Step 6: Cut the beard to size out of fluffy faux material.

Step 7: Using glue gun attach the beard below the nose.

Step 8: Using glue gun attach hat to the head.
