It’s so cold out there 🥶🥶🥶 so I decided that my little girl could do with some cute crochet mittens 😊 As she is 2.5 years old these mittens are designed for this age kids, but if you add a few more stitches to the thumb and body you could make them bigger. Just use your imagination!
For this little project I used simple DK yarn and 2.5mm crochet hook. It’s very easy to make and you will be done in an hour or two, depends on your speed 😊
First thing what we are going to make it will be the thumb. When the thumb is finished then we will crochet our body and attach thumb to it later.

Main body of crochet mittens
Don’t forget, we are making 2 mittens 😉
Round 1: create magic ring with ch 3 and 15 hdc [16]
In round 2 we will be starting round from previous round chain 3 and it will be counted as 1 hdc.
Round 2: ch 3, hdc in the same st, (hdc inc) repeat 15 times [32]
From now our rounds will start from previous round first hdc and we will skip ch 3.
Round 3-9(7 rounds): ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in all st [32]
In the next round we are going to attach our thumb to the base.
Round 10: ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in next 15 st. Next step will be crocheting around our thumb: hdc in next 12 st of the thumb. Thumb should be fully attached and we will continue hdc in the body: hdc in next 16 st [44] .
After joining your thumb with the body you may end up with a little hole between them. No worries about that, we always can fix it with yarn and needle at the end.
Round 11: ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in next 14 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 10 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 15 st [42]
Round 12: ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in next 13 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 4 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 4 st, hdc in next 15 st [39]
Round 13: ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in next 30 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 6 st [38]
Round 14: ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in next 20 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 16 st [37]
Round 15: ch 3, hdc in the same st, hdc in next 30 st, hdc dec, hdc in next 4 st [36]
Round 16-19: hdc in all 36 st [36]
Our last 4 rows will be made in crochet ribbing style. If you are not familiar with this crochet style don’t worry, as I wasn’t too. I have youtube links at the beginning of the post next to abbreviations on how to make this style 😊
Round 20-23: (fphdc in next 2 st, bphdc in next 2 st) repeat 18 times [36]
Finish with sl st and use tapestry needle to hide ends. Don’t forget to use tapestry needle to sew little hole between the body and the thumb, if you had one 😊😊
My finished mitten is in the picture below:
You didn’t say how to crochet around the thumb! 😢
Hi 😊 Thanks for your comment. You crochet thumb separately and then attach it in the round 10 of the main body. I hope this answer helps 😊
